Meet the New Woman CEO of Kohl's Who Will Run the Company's 1,100+ Store Locations

Michelle Gass, who is currently the chief merchandising and customer officer at Kohl's Corp., has been named CEO-elect of the company, and will officially become CEO of the company when the current one retires in May 2018. Michelle is currently a member of the Cigna Healthcare Board of Directors, and has been with Kohl's since 2013.

She's no rookie

Michelle has held several high positions at big name companies. From 1990 to 1996, she was a marketing director at P&G. In 1996, she accepted a position at Starbucks in the marketing department. By 2003, she was the Senior Vice President of Marketing, and by 2009, she was appointed as President of Starbucks EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Russia, Africa).

After leaving Starbucks, her next destination was Kohl's, and she has been credited with leading the efforts that resulted in the firm's recently announced partnership with Amazon.com. She also oversaw the department store chain's launch of the Under Armour brand this past year.

Ready for a challenge

Michelle says that she is ready and willing to take on the challenge of being CEO of the company.

She told reporters, "I am energized by the challenges we are all facing today in the retail sector. Kohl’s is uniquely positioned through our strong store and omnichannel presence, our powerful brand portfolio and our differentiated value proposition."

"We are resilient, innovative and agile, and will continue to make investments in our business to provide compelling customer experiences that pave the path for our future success," she added.

Her secrets to success

Michelle earned her Bachelors of Science degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and her MBA from the University of Washington's Michael G. Foster School of Business. So obviously, she believes that education is important.

But she also believes in staying healthy, and getting an early start. She says she sets her alarm every morning for 4:30 am to go running.

She also believes in keeping her team motivated. She is know to regular gave employees inspirational pep talks at the retailer’s headquarters in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
